Tesla Introduces New Universal Home Charger Compatible with All North American Electric Cars

Tesla introduced a new Level 2 home charger today, 16 August called the Tesla Universal Wall Connector, which has the unique feature of being able to charge any electric vehicle sold in North America without the need for an additional adapter. Customers can pre-order it today, and it won’t start shipping until October 2023.

Tesla’s Universal Wall Connector is simplifying the charging process for EV owners as they transition through the charging landscape. As automakers such as Ford, General Motors, Nissan and Rivian adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), so the connector uses an AC version of the Supercharger Magic Dock, which allows the charger to release a built-in J1772 adapter when the user needs it for the new North American Charging Standard (NACS) or J1772 interface EVs to address charging needs.

The Universal Wall Connector is reportedly available today at Best Buy and Tesla shops for $595 (currently around Rs. 4,344). The price is reasonable compared to Tesla’s other home charging products, which currently cost $475 for the Tesla Wall Connector and $550 for the Tesla J1772 Wall Connector.

According to the description, the charger can be used both indoors and outdoors and has an output of 11.5 kW / 48 amps, which can replenish a range of 44 miles per hour (about 70 km) and comes with an auto-induction handle that opens Tesla’s charging ports to support remote monitoring and management via the Tesla App. The wall connector has a 24-foot cable length and can share power with up to six wall connectors. Residential installations are covered by a four-year warranty for versatility and durability.

Overall, Universal Wall Connectors help to address the increasing complexity of the charging environment, ensuring that your charging solution is appropriate for the evolving electric vehicle market.
