2024 GMC Hummer Truck And SUV Can Charge Other 6kW Electric Vehicles

Last week, GMC showed during a demo of a variant of GM’s flagship SUV that the 2024 GMC Hummer electric car can charge an electric vehicle faster than a standard 120-volt outlet in most garages.
Both the 2024 Hummer EV Truck (SUT) and the new Hummer EV SUV feature a new 19.2kW on-board charger and portable charging cable that come standard on all but the base EV2 model. The available accessory socket allows you to charge a 240-volt vehicle (V2V) at 6 kW, which could mean an additional range of more than 20 mph for an efficient car like the Chevrolet Bolt EV.
Prices for the so-called Powerhouse Generator Accessory have yet to be announced, but will be available soon. With it, any modern electric vehicle equipped with a five-pin SAE J1772 connector should be able to charge from the new Hummer electric vehicle. This allows big guys like electric trucks and SUVs to not only repair SUVs stuck in the mud, but also power most electric vehicles on the road that can run out of battery.
Both versions of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV also receive vehicle-to-load (V2L) power from a GMC power plant generator that provides a 3-kilowatt 120-volt connection. Whether it’s 120 volts or 240 volts, it will run at 25 amps, which is the reason for the power difference.
Only a few other electric vehicles have this capability. The Hyundai Ioniq 5, Genesis GV60 and Kia EV6 can also charge other electric vehicles, but in the US it is limited to a 120-volt V2L plug that can only deliver about 1.3 kilowatts.
The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning has a home integration system that can power an entire home for days during a power outage, but it needs to be installed in three parts and costs $3,895. Currently, the Rivian R1T pickup and R1S SUV do not have bi-directional charging.
In most cases, the Hummer EV truck and SUV use 400V batteries installed in parallel, but they can be switched in series to 800V DC fast charging, allowing up to 300 kilowatts of power to be delivered to the battery. 100 miles range in minutes. The smaller and more efficient Ioniq 5 can charge from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes.
The range is not EPA certified yet, but GMC estimates that the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV will have a range of around 300 miles.
The difference between a truck and an SUV is that the SUV has a 9-inch shorter wheelbase and a smaller battery pack with 20 battery modules stacked 10 by 10 instead of the 24 modules stacked 12 by 12 in the truck. According to IEC standards, the SUV has a 170 kWh battery, while the Hummer EV truck has a 205 kWh battery.
The onboard charger upgrade marks a dramatic change in a short time since the 11.5kW onboard charger was first introduced on the 2022 GMC Hummer EV truck last year. “Older” trucks can jump, so to speak, but they don’t have the ability or equipment to charge another electric vehicle.
